It finally happened:

Boston Gets: Sale

ChiSox Gets: Moncada, Kopech, Basabe, Diaz

Thoughts?

The money owed to Moncada, $ 31 MM, is to be paid by the Red Sox. The deal gets a wee bit better for the Sox. (uh huh, the color isn't identified on purpose)

IMO the Red Sox stole him. They originally wanted Benintendi or JBJ along with Moncada. Not giving up anyone on the major league roster is a great win for the Red Sox.

@Soxchamps, that was my original thought but I think time will tell on this deal. Pending how Moncada develops of course, but really curious as to what Kopeck could become under Don Cooper.

On the other side, with Sale, Thornburg and Kimbrel now healthy to complete the back end, is it safe to say the Red Sox have the best roster in baseball now?

Guys, this is what actually happened so he clearly posted this after the trade.

I don't see the Red Sox as "best roster in baseball"

Weak at catcher (Leon, Vasquez, and Swihart are all incredibly overrated), terrible at 3B (Sandoval? ) . They don't seem likely to break the bank for a DH.

Add that to having almost no farm system remaining. They might have the best roster in the AL East, maybe even in the American League, but by no means in baseball. Not even close.

For what it's worth, I don't think the Red Sox "stole" Sale. If Moncada is as legitimate as everyone thinks (Kopech as well), the Red Sox will miss those guys.

They gave up a lot to get Sale and Thornburg today. But this is Dave Dombrowski's MO, and every team he has been GM of has gone through massive firesale. Every one. He has ruined lots of teams, and the Red Sox are fools if they think he's making their team better.

News flash: He gave up significant young talent to open a window that was already wide open for his club. He did it in Miami and in Detroit.

Um the Red Sox still have one of the best farm systems in the league. Just because we traded away our top prospect and our top pitching prospect doesn't mean we don't have a farm system. We still have Deverse who will replace Moncada as the Red Sox future at 3rd and Groome who will replace Kopech. We still have many others as well. Sure the system took a hit with this trade but we still have one of the best systems in the whole MLB.

The Red Sox did not steal Sale, but they got him for less than I thought they would. Moncada is the real deal, and time will tell about Kopech. But not being required to give up JBJ or Benintendi is great. Go Sox!

@RIP Jose, the post wasn't a prediction. Just a visual recap of the actual trade to hear opinions.

@Huskers, I wouldn't say there is "no farm system remaining": Benditendi, Devers, Groome, Travis, Johnson. Only teams I would say beats them on everyday position players would be maybe the cubs and nats (if they get Cutch) . Neither of them have the pitching the RedSox do now.

I know comparisons don't pan out sometimes but Moncada has been compared to Cano one of the best power hitting 2B of this gen of players, Kopech has been compared to Thor. If those 2 pan out White Sox stole it. Not to mention Kopech hit 105 in a start that's Chapman number velocity wise as a starter.

right now we win this trade obviously getting sale but we can't really decide who wins this deal for a couple years depending on how sale preforms and if moncada or kopech reach there potential i loved moncada but i'm just glad we did not give up any roster player to get this done.

Dave Dombrowski wins every trade immediately, and pays the price dearly in 3-4 seasons.

By the way, if Red Sox fans think he's hanging onto Rafael Devers, I would bet a good chunk of change Devers gets moved soon. DD doesn't like prospects.
