The Padres have shown the ability to spend at the right times. They have a very good farm with guys who are ready now and just signed Hosmer to a long deal last year. I think they're going to attempt to make a run at some big names this year.

These moves don't improve them to much more than a 78-win team, by even the most generous of projections.

I can't imagine the Padres spending almost a quarter-billion on moving up one spot in the standings.

I agree next year they would not win more than 80, but the point of the moves are for the next 2-4 years. Mejia, Urias, Tatis, Renfroe, and Gore (still a year away) all have All-star potential. Mix that in with Hosmer, Myers and Kuechel and you have a very good team for 2-4 years.

Keuchel is going to be 31 next season.
Escobar 30.
Lynn 32. Not to mention, Lance Lynn is awful and won't make that kind of money again.

The Padres don't need aging players on large contracts. Their core isn't even developed. Once that core develops and they know where they stand, then you add in those type of players.

They are 2-3 years from competing yet.
