reds trade: Bailey and Stephenson
Yankees trade: Ellsbury and gray

Contract swap with the reds throwing in a once promising prospect and the yankees throwing in disappointing gray. I think gray bounces back under his old pitching coach and ellsbury becomes the everyday centerfielder. While the yankees hope that bailey and stephenson can turn their careers around. There are other pitching prospect the Reds could offer if the yankees did not want stephenson

I wish these sites would ban any comment that suggests Ellsbury gets moved.

Newsflash Yankee fans: He won’t. Not only does no team want the guy, but there’s every indication that he’d block any trade out of New York.

I think the only way he is off the team is being DFA'd and they eat the money.

I'm not sure if he would block any move out of New York. I think he'd want to play somewhere rather that the minimal playing time he's likely to get with the Yankees. The key would be how much of his contract they're willing to eat. He's a really good player when healthy. those being the operative words, and I can see someone taking a flyer on him if they aren't having to pay him too much.

The big issue is, how motivated is New York to get him off of their roster? Their outfield is pretty packed at this point, and they might be willing to spend money just to have him go away. One fit would be the Mets. They could really use a CF, and it would be a very Wilponish move to bring in a guy who's been a disappointment somewhere else who used to be a big name for little money. He would also still be in the same city, which could get past his no trade.

Granted these two don't trade much, and he would likely be hurt forever given his history and the Mets' injury issues.

If Ellsbury is at a league minimum salary, sure.

The Yankees best choice is to DFA him. No one is giving up anything for him. Not even in a bad contract swap.

Apparently there was talk and it still has potential to happen of a Cano/ Ellsbury swap, but the Yankees want the Mariners to kick in more money for Cano. But I really don't see where Cano would fit in on the Yankees now.

I’m a Reds fan and I would love to see this trade. Homer Bailey was the worst pitcher in baseball last year and the Reds hope that Ellsbury revives his career. Ellsbury is going to be a lot more helpful than Bailey. I think the Yankees say no to this trade honestly.

And he could still be a solid player when healthy. In 2017 he had a 350 obp. I guarantee he would start over Hamilton. The Reds would much rather have his contract than baileys. Ellsbury would jump at the opportunity to go to cincy. Get out of New York where he has been scrutinized ever since he has been there and go to a club where the fan base would be ecstatic to see someone other than Billy Hamilton in center field.

If Cashman turned down an offer to get Ellsbury off the team, he's not that wise.

Taking Ellsbury's deal off of Cano, Cano is worth $14.5M a year. That's not horrible for a guy whose put up about 125 wRC+ in the past 3 seasons. And he can use the PED suspension all he wants, but that'll extend Cano's career (Bartolo Colon, anyone? ) .

So, you can pay a player to play 1B/ 2B/ DH for the next 5 years at a very modest rate, or you can pay Ellsbury almost $24M AAV the next two seasons to probably not even play.

It's a silly move for Cashman to ask for more. He's asking the Mariners to take on a completely useless player at over 20M the next two seasons.

I guess we will find out what happens during the Winter Meetings. It could happen then. And Ellsbury is at best the 5th outfielder on the team and could be the 6th beset outfielder if they keep Frazier and he turns it around, so he is 20 million dollar bench player now.
