Padres trade Dale Thayer and Jake Goebbert

Brewers trade Luis Sardinas

then

Padres trade Hedges, Liriano, Alonso, Kelly, Quentin, Benoit

Phillies trade Hamels, Howard, and about $10 mill

thoughts?

1.) 02 Feb 2015
Phillies would have to send a lot more than 10 million to San Diego.

It took Yovani Gallardo to get Sardinas, I'd imagine you'd need more to get him from Milwaukee.

The Hamels trade. I think that could be enough, but I don't know if San Diego would ever do it.

3.) 02 Feb 2015
@batman not if the padres are sending quentin and benoits expiring contracts to philly too. between those 2, that's another 14 mill. I mean maybe they might send another 5 to 10 more though.
@natedub I agree it could take a little more, maybe medica instead of goebbert, maybe another prospect like josh vanmeter as well.

I think Milwaukee would want a decent starting piece. Sardinas could easily upend Gennett or Segura at middle infield.

Hamels will be traded by himself pitting him with Howard hurts his value

6.) 03 Feb 2015
Gpack, the trade proposal you have between the Phils and Padres is about as bad as the Packers' coverage of Seattle's on-sides kick a few weeks back.

7.) 03 Feb 2015
Agree in the belief that Hamels will get traded by himself. And the Padres would have to offer (at least) Hedges, Wisler and one of Liriano or Renfroe.

8.) 03 Feb 2015
@longtimebaseball fan, how so? they get a starting 1b with power potential in a hitters park, a starting pitcher in kelly who is still young with upside, a power hitting 4th outfielder who can play left and pinch hit on an expiring contract, an expiring contract in a closer in Benoit for when they trade Papelbon, a starting caliber OF in Liriano for the future, and one of the best catching prospects in baseball. How does that not make sense.

Then the Padres get their top end starter and a 1B who can drive in runs, I mean I can't really understand from whose side it doesn't make sense from.

9.) 03 Feb 2015
@Gpack17, Hamels and Howard are owed a combined 177 million, that's including the options they have. And with you saying the Phillies should send a max 44 million to the Padres is ridiculous. The Padres would be on the hook for 133 million. Yes they took on 75 million of Kemp's contract, but I'd say at least the Phillies should cover all but about 73 million of it.

@Gpack17. A quick look at your comment history shows you changing your statement on Hedges. Here's a previous quote from you:

"Hedges hasn't produced from a hitting standpoint at any point of his career so far in the minors, who would believe that it will be a different circumstance in the majors."

That was from January 16th. so a few weeks ago.

So what is it on Hedges? Is he one of the best catching prospects in baseball or can he not hit? Or are all the other catching prospects inept in the offense department?

11.) 03 Feb 2015
@natedub exactly, if you look at any of posts instead of skimming, I have mentioned that he has had trouble hitting in the minors and I do believe he will struggle in the bigs, even though bryce harper was the same way and didn't hit until the bigs. But other than that, he is solely listed as one of the top catching prospects in baseball due to his defense and framing alone.

I read the entirety of your posts. You try to sell Hedges when it's convenient to your argument and act like he's awful when people suggest you want to keep him. Or that's what is seems.

If the only plus Hedges had was defense and framing, the Padres would have traded him by now. If they didn't think he could hit, they'd have traded him by now.

As a padres fan, I am not a fan of him going forward as the catcher of this team especially with Norris on this roster now and under control until 2020. I've always been a padres fan that not having bats has killed me, and now that we have it, I would much rather trade away a catching prospect who is known for his defense and bats under 250 in his minor league career so far.

Perhaps they haven't traded hedges yet because they were holding him out for the right deal. If you think about it, anytime you have a prospect that's highly regarded and you can pull off the trades that you did without giving him up, you do it. There may be a trade in the future that would require him and that's what preller could be saving him for.

@Gpack

1. Because it's stupid.
2. Because San Diego won't take on that much salary.
3. See No. 1
