It appears that the Braves are about ready to release Dan Uggla. They would then eat his remaining contract (minus MLB minimum if another team signs him). This is a large chunk of
"sunk money" and it will hamper Atlanta's ability to improve their roster.

Ridgerunner

1.) I think you may be right.

It has been quiet here for a couple days. Let's stir things up with a ridiculous sounding proposal:

B. J. Upton, Dan Uggla, Ian Thomas, Mark Lamm and $20mil to Rockies for Cory Dickerson, Rosell Herrera and one highly regarded Hi "A" prospect
(3rd base or outfield).

Ridgerunner

1.) Ridiculous. the rockies would never give up that much for two guys to hit under. 200. but in all seriousness its not too bad. Braves make out like bandits

2.) It has potential to be a steal for a team. Uggla is capable of 40 HRs, and Upton is a 30-30 candidate every year. Of course, they both could suck like a vacuum, but that is a risk worth taking.

Atlanta trades: Kris Medlin, B. J. Upton and Tyler Pastornicky to Mariners for: Julio Morban, Nick Franklin, Carson Smith and Xavier Avery. I think this will raise a lot of yowls from several quarters, but it will help both teams and give Atlanta some salary relief.

Ridgerunner

1.) I think this is great for Seattle. They get good players and screw over Atlanta.

2.) U R missing the big picture. Atlanta
gets over $60mil salary relief over next four years and gets good young
cost controlled players (just what the
Braves need).

3.) Please oh please explain how this helps Atlanta other than dealing away the salary of BJ Upton? Nick Franklin is okay, but him and three prospects for an All Star pitcher? Really?

4.) Please understand that Medlin is not
an all-star caliber pitcher. His salary
is near the $6mil mark and will go higher. I have some misgivings
about the big Freddy contract for a
mid-market cash-strapped team.

5.) Medlen is an all star-caliber pitcher. The past season and a half, he has been one of the best starters in MLB. To argue otherwise is foolish.

6.) How is Medlen an all star when he has never been one longtimebaseballfan? Franklin has a higher ceiling than "okay" also.

7.) To Tarheel Red.
You have not voiced an opinion on
this. I could use a little support if
you are so inclined. Come back.

8.) I said "all star caliber, " not all star. Read.

9.) To Ridgerunner
I have a couple of concerns regarding your proposal. I suggested a while back an Upton trade to Seattle, so I think there could be something there, but I'm afraid his contract could be a deal breaker. Also I worry the Braves could not replace Medlin short-term, especially after all the other name players they have lost (McCann, Hudson, O'Flaherty).
Moreover, as a Braves outsider, I have a couple of questions (perhaps this is better discussed on MLB Talk). One, I was unaware the Braves were a "cash strapped team" and, two, I have always considered the Braves to be a large market team with a very large drawing area (attendance wise). I would be very interested in your take on these topics

10.) To Tarheel Red:
Thanks for your input. I remember your BJ proposal, and you are right on concerning his contract. Braves have one of the poorest TV contracts
in MLB. Their attendance has been
dropping recently (hence their new
stadium and new location). The Uptons and Uggla deals have placed
serious constraints on their budget.
I don't expect a big let-down due to
departed players.

It has sure been Quiet on this site for a few days! Do we all have the winter blahs, or are we just laying by till Spring Training?
How about: Justin Upton to the Mariners for James Paxton, Nick Franklin and Steve Romero

Ridgerunner

1.) What makes you think Justin Upton will accept a trade to Seattle. He rejected them last year, I'd think he do the same this year.

2.) Mariners have a chance to be a strong contender this year, and Justin could have a great year hitting behind Cano. Situation changed. Upton will be looking for a big contract shortly.

3.) I don't think or know if the Mariners will be able to live up to the hype.

4.) Dude, get off the mariners trade train. No one will send their all star for a bunch of spare parts. quit sending nick franklin and james paxton everywhere for a star player that you want. it will never happen

5.) What you call junk, Paxton, Franklin, Pike. Rameriz, Morbon etc are all young talent with high upside. They are cheap and under team control for years. The mariners would most assuredly be attractive to teams rebuilding or teams looking for cheap help and team control. Maybe something happens maybe not, but the team is trying to improve and others need parts anything can happen

6.) Yes, Seattle has a lot of young guys with potential; however, that doesn't mean that other teams will send a young star in his prime to the Mariners for two or three of them.

Atlanta has young pitching too, and plans to contend this year. To do so, they'll need Upton.

7.) Atlanta will trade BJ Upton to Seattle and pay for his airfare in return for a used King Felix bobble head.

8.) Why would the Braves trade Justin Upton to begin with?

Braves trade: Kyle Kubitza and Juan Jaime

Royals trade: Emilio Bonifacio and Lane Adams

Things are looking up for this site. We have some discussion going again. I was beginning to think nobody was paying attention to the postings (which had dwindled down to very few).

The Braves would do almost
anything in order to unload Uggla.
Of course Seattle would require
a goodly (large) amount of cash,
and they have no use for Uggla
Probably cannot happen.

The Braves would probably consider
Wood, Uggla and some cash for
Franklin. What would Seattle do
with Uggla?

Not enoughfor Stanton, and you can't trade draft picks nless they are
specially awarded competitive balance picks.

I can't see Houston giving up three
serviceable players for Ryan and
his contract

Are you predicting bounce-back seasons for B. J. and Uggla? Hope
you are right!
