The Orioles have forfeited their early draft picks by signing SP Yovani Gallardo and OF Dexter Fowler. They should go just a bit further and sign SS Ian Desmond. They could keep Hardy for defensive insurance, or trade him for a prospect. Then, the lineup looks pretty damn solid.

RF Fowler
3B Machado
CF Jones
1B Davis
C Wieters
DH Trumbo
SS Desmond
2B Schoop
LF Kim/ Reimold

The rotation looks serviceable, with Gallardo, Gausman, Tillman, Ubaldo, Gonzalez, Wright and Bundy.

The lineup would probably be second only to the Blue Jays.

1.) 24 Feb 2016 02:24:55
The Gallardo deal still might not happen because of health concerns.

2.) 24 Feb 2016 02:55:37
Gallardo signing isn't official yet.

3.) 24 Feb 2016 11:55:17
Yeah, I read that too. I still think it gets done, but who knows?

4.) 24 Feb 2016 13:01:52
Gallardo may fall apart for medical reasons. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened with a player Baltimore wanted to sign, and these players have signed elsewhere. Also the loss of the draft picks is real huge for Baltimore since they have a terrible farm system.

5.) 25 Feb 2016 01:22:40
Didnt they just sign Hardy to an extension last year?

6.) 25 Feb 2016 12:56:08
Desmond would be such a waist of money, especially since they spent all the money on Davis and then went out and got Fowler Gallardo and Kim they shouldn't waist anymore money this offseason.

7.) 25 Feb 2016 15:08:11
Desmond would be a great fit in Baltimore. Showalter could use him in a utility spot to get guys off their feet.

A year at Camden Yards could bump anyone's value way up.

8.) 25 Feb 2016 17:15:17
Would it be worth it to give up another draft pick for a utility guy? But if the Os don't sign him i don't know where else he would go.

9.) 25 Feb 2016 20:16:48
The Cubs gave up $56M for a utility guy. It wouldn't be unreasonable for the Orioles to give up a 2nd Round pick for one.

10.) 25 Feb 2016 21:29:45
Fowler is back in Chicago.

11.) 26 Feb 2016 02:43:57
WOW! All media reports had Fowler signing with Baltimore. guess not.

12.) 26 Feb 2016 15:21:45
From having a 1/ 15.8 deal, to a 3/ 33, to taking a 1/ 11 deal (with the team that offered him 1/ 15.8).

Dexter Fowler needs to fire his agent.

16 Feb 2016 02:50:02
This would be near perfect.

The Nationals send SP Stephen Strasburg and 1B Ryan Zimmerman to Toronto.

The Blue Jays trade 1B Edwin Encarnacion and SP Drew Hutchison to Washington.

Other details could be tweaked, but the basis for this is sound. These two clubs also have done business before on the Drew Storen trade. Both EE and Stras are free agents after this year.

Washington gets a legit power hitter to slot into its lineup with Harper. With Giolito ready to go, the Nats' rotation of Scherzer-Gio-Roark-Ross-Giolito still is plenty strong.

Toronto gets an ace to take pressure off of Marcus Stroman, and the rotation is upgraded to contend. Zimmerman can DH, which will help keep him off the DL.

1.) 16 Feb 2016 11:57:27
It's a fair trade with both teams benefiting.

2.) 16 Feb 2016 14:08:57
This is a trade i would do from both sides.

3.) 02 Mar 2016 03:43:22
There is no difference in this trade, plus why would the Blue Jays want to trade one of their best players (Encarnacion) and a decent pitcher, but even more, the Nationals wouldn't trade their number 2 starter and their multi position player, especially if they are both trying to make the playoffs in the next year or two.

11 Feb 2016 00:08:11
Here's one that would benefit both teams.

San Diego trades SP James Shields and OF/ 1B Wil Myers to Toronto for SP Edwin Encarnicion and OF Dalton Pompey.

Toronto gets an innings eater and proven vet to slot into the rotation behind Stroman, plus a hitter with upside to replace EE's bat.

San Diego acquires a legit power hitter and a great CF prospect to cover all that ground a Petco.

The Jays cannot afford to re-sign both EE and Joey Bats, and the salaries of Shields and EE are fairly offsetting.

Walker - Texas Rangers Fan

1.) 11 Feb 2016 00:52:07
SP Edwin Encarnacion.

2.) 11 Feb 2016 02:32:34
No way the blue jays do that trade.

3.) 11 Feb 2016 03:38:28
Not a chance from the Jays and yes they do have the money to re-sign both.

4.) 11 Feb 2016 11:45:21
This is not a good trade.

5.) 11 Feb 2016 11:53:51
Okay, then I will say this. Given their ages, I think it would be a mistake for the Jays to extend both EE and Bautista.

6.) 11 Feb 2016 12:12:38
I agree about the age issue. When I say Wil Myers name, I saw him as a liability in the trade. I don't think he's played much at first base.

7.) 11 Feb 2016 13:46:39
I don't think the base of this trade is half bad. If the Padres added another piece it would probably be a decent trade.

8.) 11 Feb 2016 15:56:51
Blue Jays fans would rather hold onto an aging, injury prone DH who has a year of control over getting a front-of-the-rotation starter and a high-risk, high-reward outfielder?

I don't feel as bad about their long-suffering anymore.

9.) 11 Feb 2016 18:27:16
A front of the rotation starter with a FIP of 4.45? And its not like the Jays need and Outfielder or a first baseman that is where all of their good prospects are.

10.) 11 Feb 2016 18:29:30
Walker Texas Ranger, the team is built to win now, re-signing them is not a mistake, considering all of their good prospects come form those positions.

11.) 11 Feb 2016 20:40:40
1. Shields had a 4.45 FIP for one year. It very much seems like an outlier compared to his 3.40-3.60 FIP numbers for the 4 years prior.

2. His xFIP is 75 points lower. The expected FIP being that much lower shows there was quite a bit of randomness in his HR/ FB ratio. That his xFIP from 2015 is closer to his FIP from the years prior tells far more of a story than his 4.45 FIP.

3. His 4.45 FIP alone would have put him as the #2 or #3 guy in Toronto. His xFIP would have landed him as the #2 guy, thus "front of the rotation. "

Stats, so inconvenient, aren't they?

12.) 11 Feb 2016 23:09:21
Actually he would be #3 in xFIP behind Happ and Stroman, thus mid-rotation.

13.) 11 Feb 2016 23:42:18
Hell, Fangraphs ZiPS projections would have James Shields as the best pitcher on the Blue Jays this year.

14.) 12 Feb 2016 00:09:57
I still think this would be a good deal for both teams. Myers could play some OF, some 1B, but mostly DH. Jays have Colabello and Smoak for 1st. Shields would be a big asset for the rotation.

15.) 12 Feb 2016 03:35:59
Happ won't sustain the numbers he put up in Pittsburgh. There's not a projection anywhere that believes he will.

Shields would EASILY be a top 2 pitcher on the Blue Jays. Based on almost every Fangraphs projection, he'd actually be the best, but I'll actually give Stroman the benefit of the doubt.

Shields would be an unbelievable asset to a rotation that is 4th in the division only because they have Baltimore in the division.

16.) 12 Feb 2016 03:42:40
For what it's worth: Fangraphs has Shields at a half game higher WAR than Stroman for a ZiPS projection.

They truly believe he's a better asset than anyone on the Blue Jays pitching staff. Which, coming from Fangraphs, tells us more about the Blue Jays rotation than anything else.

17.) 12 Feb 2016 04:03:18
theJerk, ZiPS projections are always very terrible, that's not good source, for example last year they predicted for Donaldson: .265/ .338/ .468/ .806, 82 Runs, 33 Doubles, 26 HRs, 91 RBIs, 5.1 WAR, he ended up at: .297/ .371/ .568/ .939, 122 Runs, 41 Doubles, 41 HRs, 123 RBIs, 8.7 WAR. I don't put any stock into ZiPS projections.

18.) 12 Feb 2016 04:24:24
Dude, you said Shields wouldn't be a front of the rotation guy because of ONE stat from ONE year, and by comparing a guy who pitched 202 IP to a guy who threw 27 IP.

And then you took one guy who FAR exceeded his projections which were 100% reasonable considering his 2014 campaign (why would they ever project that in a player)? And never mind several players they were extremely close with their projections (Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, Rizzo, Trout, and many others) .

But seriously, if you are going to compare a guy with 200+ IP to a guy with 27 (who I still think is better, but only because I believe in Stroman), you are in zero position to downplay a projection from guys who actually know stats such as Fangraphs.

Does it ever get tiring trying to explain away stats that don't go in Toronto's favor?

19.) 12 Feb 2016 04:33:10
Also, Beyond the Boxscore has a great article comparing the different projection systems. Dan Meyer scientifically breaks down the level of error, and ZiPS was the most accurate.

Look it up: "ZiPS accuracy", and you'll find an article on Beyond the Boxscore that breaks it all down.

They don't, however, talk up the Blue Jays incessantly. Sorry.

Houston sends SP Scott Feldman and 1B Jon Singleton to New York.

Yankees trade 1B Mark Teixeira, SP Ivan Nova, and $5 million to Houston.

Astros shore up its biggest weakness and make room for 1B prospect AJ Reed. Yankees clear playing time for Greg Bird, and could use Singleton as a backup.

The teams flip Nova and Feldman to offset the salaries. Teixeira makes about $23 mil this year, while Feldman is owed $8 mil. The $5 mil helps compensate the 'Stros.

1.) 24 Jan 2016 03:03:15
Not bad.

2.) 24 Jan 2016 08:34:31
I like the idea of Houston making a play for Ross. But the deal won't include Bregman, Reed, Kyle Tucker, Cameron, Moran or Martes.

3.) 24 Jan 2016 12:02:59
This is a good deal for Houston. They need to upgrade first base.

4.) 24 Jan 2016 12:45:40
Why Singleton, they don't need him. They have Greg Bird waiting to take over at first.

5.) 24 Jan 2016 19:43:44
Yes please :)

6.) 25 Jan 2016 04:20:31
I would do that as a Yankee fan. Singleton could DH once Beltran and A-Rod are gone, still leaving 1st open for Bird.

7.) 25 Jan 2016 15:22:38
I would value Feldman and Singleton MUCH higher than Teixeira and Nova.

Singleton is cheap and controllable. Teixeira is not.

8.) 28 Jan 2016 05:19:37
What would Feldman do for NYY.

23 Jan 2016 19:56:00
San Diego capitalizes on the losers in the free agency sweepstakes.

Padres send SP Tyson Ross to Houston. Astros look like the real deal with a rotation of Keuchel, Ross, McHugh, Fiers and McCullers.

Astros send pitcher Brad Peacock, SS prospect Alex Bregman, and pitching prospect Michael Feliz to San Diego. Peacock and Feliz could pitch this year in San Diego, but the centerpiece is Bregman, who is blocked in Houston by Correa and Altuve. Padres then have a future middle infield combo of Bregman and Javier Guerra.

Walker - Texas Rangers Fan

1.) 24 Jan 2016 05:17:26
One more prospect heading to SD and its a good deal.

2.) 24 Jan 2016 08:26:31
I can't see Bregman going for someone like Ross. If Bregman has a big year this season he could headline a deal next offseason for an ace like Sonny Gray, Chris Sale, or Chris Archer. Bregman has that much potential.

3.) 24 Jan 2016 17:13:51
D Backs sent Dansby Swanson plus two others to Atlanta for Shelby Miller. I don't think Bregman is too much for Ross.

4.) 25 Jan 2016 00:22:55
I would never use Dave Stewart as the litmus for trades.

This is the same guy that gave up Touki Toussaint for Bronson Arroyo.

5.) 25 Jan 2016 06:03:39
Yeah but that's the catch. It was Shelby Miller not Tyson Ross.

6.) 25 Jan 2016 17:07:41
Tyson Ross is significantly better than Miller.

Past two years:

Ross- 7.6 WAR, 3.13 xFIP
Miller- 3.9 WAR, 4.27 xFIP

Not to mention Miller's second half was more in line with his career numbers than his first.

Arizona paid for Miller's first half numbers, which they'll never again see, especially not in a tougher division.

7.) 26 Jan 2016 02:29:47
I agree that Ross is a little better than Miller. I guess that actually proves my point. If a team is willing to give up that much for Miller, I tend to believe that a team would give up a similar package for Ross.

8.) 26 Jan 2016 05:30:56
I just feel that Houston has the prospects to get an elite top of the rotation guy. Such as Gray, Sale, Archer, Degrom, Strasburg. I'm saving Bregman for one of those. More than likely Bregman will eventually be moved. I think that with a big year this season his value could be super high and land a really big fish.

9.) 26 Jan 2016 06:33:00
Craig, the Astros would have to give up Correa for Chris Sale. There's not a chance either side would be reasonable in a trade, and it makes sense that such would be the case.

10.) 27 Jan 2016 04:43:43
We'll see. If the White Sox have a bad season with with no hope on the horizon they could be sellers. What if Bregman has a big year and he projects a tick below Correa. Maybe a package of Bregman, Musgrove, Feliz, and one other not named K Tucker, Cameron, Martes or Reed gets it done. Also how long will Oakland go without dealing Gray. I can't see Oakland finishing better than 3rd in the division for the next 5 years. Eventually the Mets are going to have to deal one of their studs.

11.) 27 Jan 2016 08:44:37
The Indians were asking for the likes of Brandon Belt and Joe Panik, for Carlos Carrasco. CARLOS CARRASCO.

The Marlins wanted the world for Jose Fernandez.

The Diamondbacks gave away the #1 overall pick, a criminally underrated OF, and a very good pitching prospect for Shelby Miller, who is the worst of the three people I've named so far.

If you think for a second that the price tags for Chris Sale or Sonny Gray will be significantly lower than those, you're sadly mistaken.

And please, don't be a moron and suggest that those prospects match up to Seager + Urias, or even Belt + Panik. They don't, and the likelihood is, they probably won't. At least not for a while.

12.) 28 Jan 2016 07:04:36
Every season that passes and the Indians, White Sox, and especially the A's don't make the postseason they lose another year that that could begin the process of getting to the postseason, and adding to the disenchantment of an ace pitcher who has no hopes of getting to the postseason. Then they have to sell even lower or lose them to free agency. I get your point but who blinks first?

13.) 01 Feb 2016 17:22:01
Carrasco is a top 20 pitcher in baseball. He is better than miller and ross and not a massive amount behind gray. Carrasco will be an allstar.

The Orioles look as if they may be nearing a deal with SP Yovani Gallardo and OF Dexter Fowler, and are considering a trade for Reds OF Jay Bruce.

Bringing in all three would keep Baltimore in the thick of the AL East race with a very solid lineup.

If they do that, the Orioles should also trade some of their minor league pitching to San Diego for at least one, and perhaps two, of James Shields, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross. Such as deal would benefit both teams.

What do you guys think of the Rays-Rockies trade?

Walker - Texas Rangers Fan

1.) 29 Jan 2016 08:12:30
I don't get it from Colorado's end. They should have held out for a bigger return.

But the cost teams are paying for relief pitching is utterly moronic. I appreciate teams like the Mariners and Rangers for trading minor pieces for good upgrades.

I really like teams that develop their bullpen from within. But the market is now starting OFs for a closer, which is dumb.

24 Jan 2016 17:11:13
Good landing spots for several remaining free agents.

Yovani Gallardo - Colorado Rockies, who need SPs and would not have to surrender a draft pick

Ian Desmond - Seattle Mariners, who are starved for offense

Dexter Fowler - Los Angeles Angels, who need a LF and a leadoff hitter

Doug Fister - Baltimore Orioles, who really need candidates for the rotation

Tyler Clippard - Washington Nationals, who could still use bullpen help and could welcome back a familiar face

Austin Jackson - Cleveland Indians, who still have a pressing need for OFs

Mat Latos - Pittsburgh Pirates, who have holes in the rotation after Cole and Liriano, and have a master pitching coach in Ray Searage

Pedro Alvarez - Washington Nationals, who could use Alvarez as a DH in interleague games and a backup/ platoon partner for RH-hitting Ryan Zimmerman

Tim Lincecum - Oakland Athletics, as Billy Beane is always looking for talent

Howie Kendrick - Arizona Diamondbacks, who fill a hole in the infield

David Freese - Milwaukee Brewers, who have a big hole at 3B

Justin Morneau - San Diego Padres, who can then move Wil Myers to LF

Juan Uribe - Cleveland Indians, who have a guy named Giovanny Urshela at 3B now.

this won't happen, but it's fun to think about

the dodgers acquire outfielder mike stanton, outfielder marcell ozuna and starter jose fernandez

the marlins get outfielder yasiel puig, outfielder andre ethier, outfielder-first baseman scott van slyke, and pitchers julio urias, grant holmes and jose deleon

los angeles gets its coveted ace to match with kershaw, making the rotation one of the best in baseball. The dodgers also restock the outfield with stanton, who is from southern cal, and ozuna, who the marlins don't value

miami gets a cuban star in puig to help draw fans, a replacement outfielder in ethier, a right handed guy to match with first baseman justin bour, and three top young pitchers to replace fernandez and reboot the staff

everybody wins.
