Angels offseason:

Bunch of contracts off the books: payroll flexibility

Resign Upton: add 1 year to current deal make it a five year 115 million deal.

Sign Moustakis to a 5 year 85 million contract

Sign Alex Cobb to 4 year 60 million contract

Trade for Ian Kinsler as Detroit continues to do their rebuild. Angels and Detroit seem to be on speed dial with each other.

Kinsler
Trout
Upton
Pujols
Moustakis
Simmons
Calhoun
Cron
Maldonado

Richards
Cobb
Shoemaker
Bridwell
Skaggs

They don't really have as much money coming off the books as it seems.

About $28-35M off, but you have $22M in raises going to Trout, Pujols, Simmons, and others. Not to mention arbitration costs. The Angels have multiple guys going to arbitration, and it's projected around $30M there.

That's a net loss of ~$17-24M.

They'll open up for one of those guys. You'd be hard-pressed to suggest they'll spend a quarter of a billion this offseason.

2.) 19 Oct 2017 01:58:37
The market consensus is that the Angels will spend big on ONE guy and rummage for spare parts for the rest of their needs.

Moreno has had his fair share of upside-down contracts, Josh Hamilton being one. Pujols' deal looks terrible now. I doubt he wants to spend too much money on one guy.

Angels remaining off-season

Sign Matt Wieters 1 year plus 1 year option based on games caught. 8 million plus incentives

Ivan Nova 3 year 39 million. Move Jesse Chavez to bullpen to cover Richards limit innings as well as Skaggs as well.

Angels hopes are that of the rotation and Jesse Chavez would be valuable as that number 6 spot starter long relief guy. Nova isn't a ace but Angels with limited resources to trade for a Archer/ Quintana type pitcher limits options. The lineup is improved as maybin Espinosa and wieters is better than Daniel Nova Johnny giovatello and Perez. This still leaves Angels under the cap and mid season trade options.

1.) 17 Dec 2016 15:44:34
Believable. But the Angels with those moves are still a 75-win team, maybe worse. The pitching staff is weak.

2.) 17 Dec 2016 20:51:17
they won 75 last year and this team is improved by the maybin espinosa additions. that's incorrect Red Sox guy.

3.) 17 Dec 2016 21:40:49
Perhaps. Perhaps not. We shall see.

4.) 17 Dec 2016 23:01:11
So in your mind giovetella and Daniel Nova are just as good as maybin and Espinosa. That tells me all I need to know about your baseball knowledge. Garrett Richards back in rotation and no improvement. Tells me your just Angels hater and not a baseball fan. I am a baseball fan first and realize things with rotation must go right and injury concerns. Playoffs slim chance but by no means no chance. 2018 is when I'm looking for playoff baseball for the Angels. I'm not no front runner so stick by my team win or loss.

5.) 18 Dec 2016 14:06:15
Just because the Angels won 75 last year - a losing record, by the way - and added two guys does not mean they'll have a better record. Pujols is one year older, the rotation has more holes than a poor kid's underwear, the bullpen is shaky, and the farm system has tumbleweeds blowing through it. Richards is their only above average SP, and he is returning from injury. Trout and Calhoun are the only starters that are above league average. The payroll is already way too high. This team is in probably worse shape than any MLB franchise. So, 75 is not hating, it's actually optimistic.

6.) 18 Dec 2016 15:42:27
I think that once Pujols and Richards and Skaggs are all healthy they will be a scary team, and then next year once their other starters come back they will be back to contending in my opinion.

7.) 20 Dec 2016 02:51:38
Angels fans, you just got the kiss of death - an endorsement by Sull.

30 Jan 2016 19:28:19
Angels losing out on left fielders but will make a trade before season starts.

Angels trade CJ Wilson to the Yankees for Brett Gardner. Trade occurs at end of spring training when CJ shows he is healthy and angels do not include cash in the deal.

Gardner
Escobar
Trout
Calhoun
Pujols
Cron
Simmons
Perez
Giavetello.

1.) 30 Jan 2016 20:25:35
I would love this but New York does this why?

2.) 30 Jan 2016 20:45:24
I do believe that Gardner is a perfect fit for the Angels because they need a lefty hitting left fielder who can bat leadoff and that's exactly what Gardner. However, the Yankees have said they want a young controllable pitcher not an old pitcher with a big salary. They've clearly said many times that they don't want to add anymore payroll. Maybe something like Gardner for Santiago would work.

3.) 30 Jan 2016 20:52:50
Then they trade Mike Trout to the Braves for Jim Johnson.

Gotta balance craziness with craziness.

4.) 30 Jan 2016 21:28:21
Yankees will want more than CJ fricking Wilson for Gardner.

5.) 01 Feb 2016 02:08:24
B wright trout what are u smoking.

6.) 01 Feb 2016 16:43:32
Or. Angels trade Mike Trout for Melvin Upton Jr. and Wil Myers.

7.) 01 Feb 2016 20:12:33
RedSox fan34 what are you talking about? I didn't say anything about trout.

Angels Off-Season

Heyward better fit but Angels farm system can't afford another loss of a draft pick especially since the simmons trade of the 2 top prospects.

Artie Moreno will not want Seattle to over take the Angels in the standings and if he wants any chance of winning a playoff game with Pujols and Trout will need to pay 1 year luxury tax

Sign Cespedes 5 years 105 million
Sign Zobrist 4 years 60 million
Resign Freese 3 years 27 million
Trade for Simmons (done)
Sign Pennington (done)
Sign Soto (done)

Lineup

SS Simmons
RF Calhoun
CF Trout
DH Pujols
LF Cespedes
1B Cron
2B Zobrist
3B Freese
C Perez

Bench
C Soto
Inf Pennington
2B Giavotella
OF/1B Navarro
OF Navarro

Bid and sign Maeda (20 million bid not towards budget) sign 4 years 40 million
Trade Wilson to Dodgers for low A prospect (salary dump)
Sign Sipp 3 years 15 million

Starting rotation
Richards
Heaney
Maeda
Weaver
Santiago

Bullpen
Salas
Sipp
Rasmus
Gott
Smith
Street.

It's hard giving up a first round pick, however the need for a lefty bat is huge! Eppler is going for defense, Heyward is easily the best defensive outfielder in the game. Heyward is the guy for the Halos.

2.) 05 Dec 2015 01:55:22
Heyward is not even close to the best defensive OF, but to be fair nobody is because Kiermair, is literally twice as good as anyone else, that's coming from a Jays fan who has Kevin Pillar.

3.) 05 Dec 2015 03:17:25
Forgot to put one in there, my bad.

4.) 05 Dec 2015 03:51:24
Heyward has always had great defense Blujays what are you talking about.

5.) 05 Dec 2015 04:08:05
Who are the last 2 Navarros? I only know the first one. Is there one I don't know about? Excluding the catcher which it obviously isn't because he doesn't play outfeild.

6.) 05 Dec 2015 04:20:58
Not sure about the Navarro boys, but the Angels need a left fielder and a lefty hitter who gets on base, not a right handed slugger who strikes out a lot.

7.) 05 Dec 2015 04:31:27
Meant to put Cunningham.

8.) 05 Dec 2015 05:19:05
Artie Moreno is a moron and doesn't care about draft picks. They will definitely lose a draft pick or two this winter. Cespedes will probably get slightly more. With the massive interest in Zobrist he could make more. And your foolish to believe that Kenta Maeda will get a 4 year 40 million contract. Tanaka got 160, I think Maeda could get into 100 million range.

Minn trades Plouffe
LAA trades Bedrosian and ptbnl

Since agreement for park seems to be in place makes Plouffe expandable for bullpen depth.

mlbgmnot

1.) 29 Nov 2015 05:41:31
Not quite enough for Plouffe but a solid starting point. Maybe a Nate Smith would do it.

2.) 29 Nov 2015 13:29:13
An idea I've seen:

Angels:Plouffe

Twins:Bedrosian and Gott.

3.) 29 Nov 2015 14:03:02
Minnesota passes. A below average RP for an above average starting 3B. Not going to happen. Minnesota can get that relief production cheaply, either from their minors or a low level FA.

4.) 29 Nov 2015 15:01:48
Plouffe is a decent option at 3B, and considering a few contenders such as the Angels need help there, the Twins will do much better than this.

Angels should have done Eaton trade with Nationals but with Calhoun to get that return, Calhoun is better than Eaton. Missed opportunity.

mlbgmnot

1.) 11 Dec 2016 04:10:56
The only problem is that Calhoun isn't really a center fielder. The Nat's are going to put Eaton in center with Werth and Harper in LF and RF, I don't think the Bat's would feel comfortable putting Calhoun in CF or putting him in RF and forcing Harper to CF, that is the only reason why I don't think they did that move.

28 Nov 2015 19:01:38
Puig to no one. Talk about killing any trade value he has. Great talent but what a waste. Dodgers should take whatever anyone offers. Addition through subtraction. Maybe to Miami for low A prospect.

mlbgmnot

1.) 28 Nov 2015 20:28:39
Dumbest thing I've heard on this site. Guys he's 25 yes he's so immature but the talent outweighs the immaturity.

2.) 29 Nov 2015 03:13:06
He reminds me of Milton Bradley. Incredibly talented, but no manager wanted to deal with him. He had so many problems on and off the field, that eventually teams saw that the immaturity actually outweighed the talent.

I have a feeling we're going to see that with Puig. I give him a few more years.

3.) 29 Nov 2015 20:38:19
I don't think this could/would happen but if I'm the Dodgers FO and this continue this into the season I would suspend him for the rest of the season for conduct dentrimental to the team.

4.) 30 Nov 2015 15:57:57
Dodgers would need to have a damn good reason to issue a team-suspension that lasts for an entire/remainder of the year. It would almost assuredly be stricken down by the players union.

I just don't see how the Dodgers could move him. So, if I'm the Dodgers, if it gets worse, I buy him out and move along. Let him be someone else's problem.

Eaton is a average to good player but this to me tells me Washington did not see the upside of these prospects than those that rates these players. Should have been able to get Sale for that.

Red Sox Guy. You are hilarious. This isn't going to be a remake of the Babe Ruth trade the idiot red soxs made decades ago. you don't trade franchise players. angels have money coming off the books and they are no longer signing bad contracts. Trout if you haven't noticed is a player that is a person that isn't about being selfish like most players. he is humble and respectful. The Angels would only trade him if they thought he would leave but the Angels will sign to another extension before he even gets close to free agency. He is a player that knows that baseball is a lot bigger than him and he would never put himself to come across as a guy that is bigger than the game. Trout will be on one team only the Angels where he will retire and go into the Hall of Fame as a Angel player. Yankee fans move on. The Angels will never trade Trout. You do not trade once in a lifetime players.

Red Sucks Fan. Shoemaker a bum, trash? Really he makes more money than you playing a game. What does that make you? Shoemaker is a good pitcher but is a 3 or 4 at best.
