Padres-Marlins

Marlins trade Stanton

Padres trade Wil Myers, Corey Spangenberg, Anderson Espinoza, Eric Lauer, Jorge Ona, and Logan Allen

I know this is far fetched, but just want to see what people think.

So Stanton goes from one losing team to another? I doubt it. Also that is way too much for him. Also Stanton would reject a trade there.

A couple hang-ups I'd have:

1. Does swapping Myers for Stanton help San Diego in any way?
2. Would Stanton want to play on a rebuilding San Diego team that doesn't have guys like Wil Myers?
3. I think this is way too much for Stanton.

People have to remember: Stanton is owed $295MM through 2027. If he doesn't opt out (I have strong doubts he will) after 2020, that's a 7/ $218MM deal. That's a lot of money owed and a serious gamble.

Unless the Marlins take on about $50MM+ or more, the return will be very minimal. Teams just won't give up a premium for that kind of money.

The only reason that I thought about this idea was because Josh Naylor is about a year away. This would give the Padres an outfield or Stanton, Margot, Renfroe with a good young rest of the roster.

I wouldn't bank on Naylor. He hasn't particularly hit very well at any level, and scouts seemed to sour on him and his lack of athleticism.

The Padres need Myers, and a team with Stanton but with a lesser 1B is probably a wash.
