The Giants are going to give up two of their best young players for a 1-year rental? No way.

^Thats fine. Rays will probably just keep Zobrist then. His versatility makes him useful to even a rebuilding team.

According to Gammons, multiple GMs think that the Giants are going to trade for Zobrist.

Zobrist has been the second most valuable player in baseball according to WAR since 2008. While he may not have the sexy high volume of home runs and stolen bases as most star players, he creates his value from excellent plate discipline, base running and above average to gold glove caliber defense at every position excluding catcher. These are the values that truly determine a players worth.

Last season, he was worth 5.7 WAR, higher than each of Heyward, Upton, Samardzija, andKendrick, all players traded with one year remaining before free agency. While he may be 34, in terms of pprojecting future performance, the most recent year and a strong track record carry the most weight.Further, Zobrist plays more of a premium position than the aforementioned players and gives any.club extreme versatility. In terms of a return, Zobrist should exceed or at worst match any of those returns.

Having read some intelligent Giants blogs, it's assumed the deal would have to include Susac and likely one of Mella or Crick. Most intelligent Giant fans realize this and have been discussing similar perameters.

It's not that it won't take that package. it's that the Giants won't trade that package for a one-year rental.

Also, Samardzija is extremely likely to sign an extension, as are multiple pitchers, all of whom will be competing for big contracts in a flooded market. The Giants don't serve well to re-sign a 34 y/o 2B/OF after giving up two future players.

^ I wouldn't go so far to say that "most" of the pitchers are likely to extend.

9.) 29 Dec 2014
Well Susac is clearly blocked by Posey and it would be a waste to keep him in a reserve role. In addition to Susac, I'm sure they could build a strong enough package, such as a couple players like Okert and Carbonell.

I never said "most". I said "multiple". Big difference.

Pitchers like Cueto, Zimmermann, Samardzija, Fister and those guys won't draw the suitors like Price and Greinke (who is going to opt out) will. and with the money they'll want, teams will just sign someone else instead of giving up $125M+ and a draft pick. There might actually be more money in the extensions.
